For our customers in the US, we've been told US Customs and Border Control might charge an import duty of 7% on our woollen fabric. The charge is based on the value of the fabric (excluding shipping), and there may also be some small fees in addition. While we cannot guarantee the amount that will be charged, it's likely to be something along those lines.

If ordering more than a yard to an address outside of UK, please provide us with a contact telephone number in the notes field when you check out as we may send it by courier.

This 100% wool fabric has been specially commissioned by The Tudor Tailor from a Yorkshire mill and is available in various colours. The weave is a 2/2 twill which has a good stretch across the bias, making it an excellent choice for bias-cut hose. It also has a lovely drape and makes up beautifully for petticoats, kirtles, coats and gowns.

The range of colours is based on the mass survey of 57,000 garments extracted from wills and inventories which is the basis for our book The Typical Tudor. Our findings make it clear that there were strong conventions in choices of colour for certain garments depending on one's gender and social status.

This listing is for woollen cloth in 'sheep colour'. This is a 16th century term referring to the fact that the wool was undyed and was simply the natural colour of the sheep's wool, in this case white! Undyed white wool was typical wear for men's hose and working women's petticoats, frocks, cassocks and coats. It was also commonly bequeathed for gowns for the poor (men and women) by testators in wills of the early to mid 16th century.

PLEASE NOTE, this fabric is sold by the half yard (46cm). To order the exact amount required simply select multiple quantities before adding it to your cart. For example, if you need 3½ yards, select 7 in the 'quantity' box and we'll cut the 3½ yards as one continuous length of cloth. The best indication of the true colour is shown in the photos which show multiple colours together.

We offer a range of natural fabrics to meet the making needs of the discerning costume maker from basic calico (US muslin) for toiles to quality linens for making linings and underwear. We also offer a variety of woollen fabrics appropriate for Tudor reconstructions. Please visit our fabric section to see our complete range.
