This listing is for black silk thread. Most constructional stitching was carried out with linen thread in the 16th and 17th centuries, but Tudor tailors sometimes used coloured silk thread for finishing.

This thread has been specially selected for hand sewing and is suitable for hemming and applying guards and trims. This thread is also appropriate for embroidery, including black work.

This thread is a good choice for garments constructed in our 2/2 twill woollen cloth in poor black. It also goes nicely with our black wool broadcloth.

We offer other colours of silk thread, plus both bleached and unbleached linen thread. To see all our thread options, please visit our thread section.

Please note, the photographs of the embroidered smock and stomacher details are examples of embroidery carried out with our black silk thread. No actual garment is included in this listing.
