The Tudor Tailor is delighted to be able to offer a range of beautiful cotton lace from a traditional Nottingham lace factory. This specially commissioned design can be used as insertion lace or paired with our stunning scalloped 'Schole House' lace, as shown in the third photo above, to make an extra wide lace perfect for late Elizabethan or early Stuart ruffs and falling bands. Available in ivory, 1⅜in (35mm) wide.
This design is adapted from one contained in 'A Schole-House for the Needle', first published by Richard Shorleyker in 1624, and is suitable for the late 16th century through to the mid-17th century - perfect for Elizabethan costumes.
The manufacturing process of this 100% cotton lace leaves it with a creamy colour. If a brighter, whiter shade is desired it is easily achieved by soaking the lace in hand hot water mixed with ordinary washing powder. Leave the lace to soak for half an hour before checking to see if it has lightened enough. If not, leave it to soak for longer.
Once the desired shade is achieved rinse the lace in clean water and gently squeeze out. Hang the lace up to dry, smoothing it out as much as possible, and allow to dry. Iron when slightly damp for a pristine finish.
PLEASE NOTE, this lace is sold by the half yard. To order the exact amount required simply select multiple quantities before adding it to your cart. For example, if you need 3½ yards, select 7 in the 'quantity' box and we'll cut the 3½ yards as one continuous length of lace.
