Man's cassock, petticoat and slops made as part of The Tudor Tailor's research into the dress of sixteenth century sailors and mariners. The clothes are also suitable for a lowly or labouring man from the 1540s to 1603.
The ensemble consists of:
Wide-legged slops made from specially commissioned checked russet wool dyed yellow. The slops fasten with a single button and a hand-stitched button hole in the front of the waistband. The slops are unlined.
A petticoat of red worsted lined with unbleached linen. The red worsted is pieced over the chest and there are no fastenings. The garment pulls on over the head.
A cassock made of grey, undyed 'sheep-colour' russet wool lined throughout with unbleached linen. The cassock is trimmed around the neck opening and hem with a black linen tape and fastens at the neck with three handmade cloth ball buttons and tape loops. The sleeves are fastened at the wrist with three cloth buttons and hand-stitched buttonholes. All finishing is carried out by hand and no machine stitching is visible inside or outside.
A red wool knitted thrum cap made by Sally Pointer.
All garments were worn only for a photoshoot and a small number of events. They are in very good condition.
The white linen shirt and shoes are not included.
